The news reports that AMD is developing a series of artificial intelligence (AI) chips which it has revealed at the Computex in Taipei. This move can be seen with AMD trying to market itself as one of the industry’s prominent chip makers, especially in the AI space where it is faced with competition from companies such as Nvidia and Intel.
A Focus on AI
In particular, during her speech, AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su said, “AI is our number one priority. ”To underscore this point, she stated that we are in the early days of an exciting journey whereby the deployment of AI is anticipated to revolutionize corporations, improve our lives, and remodel the computing sector.
New Chips for the Laptops and Desktop Computers
They were unveiled by Su during the conference when she presented the Ryzen AI 300 series which is intended for the next-generation laptops with AI elements. These chips are due to go head to head with Intel’s Lunar Lake and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series. In its partnership with Microsoft, these chips will power laptops equipped with Microsoft’s AI chatbot, Copilot.
Furthermore, in early November 2020, AMD released the Ryzen 9000 series for desktop computers, which Su described as the world’s fastest consumer PC processors for gaming and creating professionals. The release of the Ryzen AI 300 is expected alongside the availability of the Ryzen 9000 series in July.
Competitive Maintenance
This announcement comes on the heels of AMD April Ryzen Pro 8040 for laptops launch along with Ryzen Pro 8000 embedded for desktops with capabilities in AI processing. The competition in the development of new and better processors has gained momentum, and Nvidia unveiled its newest Artificial Intelligence chip simply known as “Rubin”. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, has vowed to release new chips every year for AI, a frequency that AMD also intends to follow.
Future Plans and Roadmap
AMD also described its future expectations and developments, among which there are the Instinct MI325X accelerators, an improved version of the MI300 series, slated for the fourth quarter of the year. AMD has big plans for the future in their computing portfolio- The Instinct MI350 series is scheduled for 2025, while the Instinct MI400 series will be released in 2026 with the next-generation design.
Su also introduced the new fifth-generation EPYC server processors to debut in the second half of 2019, which will maintain AMD’s tradition of delivering high-performance, energy-efficient EPYC processors.
Manufacturing Partnerships
Unlike Nvidia, AMD heavily relies on outsourcing its chip manufacturing, though a key partner in this regard is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.
AMD has recently unveiled the Ryzen AI 300, the new Ryzen 9000, and the fifth generation of EPYC microprocessors, all of which are based on the new “Zen 5” architecture. As Su has concluded, ‘You’re going to see Zen 5 everywhere; in supercomputers, in data centers, in PCs, and so on.
These announcements come as perfect for the revolution in the Artificial Intelligence field where AMD is set to offer technologically advanced parts that are necessary for the developments in computing systems.
