Deepfakes Gone Too Far? Meta Seeks Public Input on AI-Made Celebrity Images
Meta, the owner of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, is asking public opinion on how to deal with AI pictures that have been used to spread false information about celebrities, whether they are from India or the US. The two cases are that of an Indian celebrity and an American celebrity.
A stealthy act of an AI-generated image of a woman resembling a public figure from India was posted on Instagram in one instance. This, in turn, has fueled the fear, particularly in India, where deepfake is taking a firmer hold. The Indian users who reacted to the image were the majority of users. In the procedural guidelines issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), social media platforms have been asked to take down such content. Despite this, Meta is accepting comments from the public on this matter from its Oversight Board.
On a similar note, in the USS, there was an AI-generated obscene image of an American celebrity which has been posted in the Facebook group. In reality, the image was immediately removed for infringement of Facebook’s Community Rules but the Board seeks input from the public on the most proper action to be taken.
In both the cases under discussion, the identities of the celebs have not been revealed. Nevertheless, during the given period of 14 days, anyone can express their reactions to these cases until April 30.
In this regard, these cases illustrate the challenge of AI-crafted content on social media platforms and the need for the community’s input to address the issues. Moreover, this issue highlights the need of the hour to formulate clear rules and effective control strategies to inhibit the propagation of fake or harmful content online.
